THEME 3: IDENTIFY A PLASTIC WASTE PROBLEM IN YOUR LOCALITY (CITY, TOWN, VILLAGE): SUGGEST AN IINOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM (I.E. GET RID OF THE PLASTIC WASTE “EYESORE”
During your lifetime, have you driven past, or walked by a plot of land filled with plastic and municipal waste that was not an official public or private dump site or landfill? Have you asked yourself why does this physical eyesore exist? Who owns the land? Why doesn’t any level of government (local, state, national) do anything about it? What is stopping removal? Why are local people or industry still using it as a convenient disposal site? Does it ever get cleaned up, and if so, why after a period of time does it revert back? Is this plastic-covered land on the outskirts of a wooded area? Is it an area that is hardly trafficked and/or off the beaten path? In an abandoned parking lot? An abandoned vacant parcel of land? What are the circumstances of its existence? Imagine your team has been given the assignment to not only investigate the above questions, but to create a step-by-step plan, involving the right stakeholders, to get this plot of land forever cleaned up and permanently without municipal and plastic waste.
This is the case study your team is being asked to write. Who knows what is possible: if your team thoroughly researches the problem, and offers up an easy-to-do and sustainable solution, your blueprint for getting rid of the waste, i.e. your case study, might actually be considered, especially if you involve the stakeholders at the very start of your case study process.
